JAKARTA, Indonesia (chinatrucks) — Chinese electric vehicle maker XPENG delivered its first X9 model produced in Indonesia on Thursday, marking the company’s first local manufacturing milestone outside China and the launch of its global localization strategy.

The announcement was made at the 2025 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show, where XPENG confirmed Indonesia as its first overseas production base. The locally built X9 was handed over to an Indonesian customer during the event.

XPENG Vice President Wu Jiaming said the company is committed to advancing intelligent and electric mobility in partnership with Indonesia. In a video message, Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng said the company aims to respond more quickly to international markets and deliver smart, engaging vehicles to technology-focused consumers.

At the show, XPENG also showcased its lineup of smart mobility products, including the X9 and G6 electric vehicles, a flying car prototype, and its AI-powered humanoid robot known as IRON, as part of its “AI + Mobility” vision.

Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s most populous nation and its largest EV market, is a key focus in XPENG’s regional strategy. Local production is expected to help tailor the company’s offerings to local needs and driving conditions.

XPENG is also building out its retail and service network in Indonesia, with plans to open experience centers in major cities such as Jakarta, Bali and across Java Island. The company aims to cover 70% of core urban areas and 85% of high-density regions by the end of 2025.

The X9, XPENG's first vehicle to be both produced and delivered overseas, features a flexible interior layout that allows it to shift between a four-seat SUV and a seven-seat MPV. It includes rear-wheel steering and AI-assisted driving features, catering to larger households and urban transport demands.

Since its launch in April 2025, the X9 has ranked as the top-selling premium all-electric MPV in China for two consecutive months and led MPV sales in Hong Kong in June. XPENG aims for the model to become the best-selling premium electric MPV in the Asia-Pacific region by year-end.

XPENG began its international expansion in 2020 and now operates in 46 countries and regions. The company has ranked first among Chinese EV startups in sales across 10 European markets and has delivered more than 800,000 vehicles globally.

The start of local manufacturing in Indonesia signals a new phase in XPENG's overseas strategy, combining regional production, technology deployment and long-term brand investment to strengthen its international presence.
