SAIC-GM-Wuling hit a major milestone on August 22 as its 8 millionth MPV rolled off the line at the Baojun base, where the automaker also unveiled its latest global model, the Starlight 730. SAIC Chairman Wang Xiaoqiu, President Jia Jianxu and other executives attended the launch.

The Starlight 730 debuted in both left-hand drive for China and right-hand drive for export markets, underscoring the brand’s ambition to compete globally.

SAIC-GM-Wuling is the first Chinese automaker to produce 8 million MPVs. Over the past 15 years, it has built a strong portfolio, starting with the best-selling Wuling Hongguang, followed by the Baojun 730, Wuling Victory and Wuling Jiachen, cementing its position as the country’s MPV leader.

The Wuling Hongguang, launched in 2010, became a breakout hit, once selling more than 80,000 units in a single month in 2014 — a record in China’s auto industry. More than 6 million customers have chosen the model, which has topped its segment for 14 straight years. The Baojun 730, introduced in 2014, was China’s first seven-seat family MPV, winning J.D. Power’s quality award for five years and reaching nearly 1.4 million households. Later entries like the Victory and Jiachen raised the bar on comfort and quality.

The company says its philosophy is simple: “Build what people need.” The 8 million milestone reflects not only production volume but also customer trust in the brand.

Looking forward, SAIC-GM-Wuling will showcase the new Starlight 730 at the 2025 Chengdu Auto Show, aiming to bring Chinese MPVs to a wider global stage.
